Japanese-English words

Hello, again!
Do you know Japanese-English words? It is also called “Japanglish”.
For example, we Japanese said order-made. But it is custom-made truthfully. I didn’t know that. As told above, there are many Japanese-English words that we don’t know it is not English. And I don’t introduce only them but also British English.

     Skin ship
We usually say skin ship, but it is Japanese-English. Personal contact is correct! Surely, I use this word.

     Consent
When I went to the UK, I made this mistake! In the UK, people usually call it socket. Did you know?

     Key holder
English people call it key ring!

Next, what do you know it is called this in British English?

Did you think it is "sweater"?
But in British English, it is "jumper". I don't know why. I think it is interesting!!!

So what is this?

It is not "Pants"! It is called "Under wear" in British English. Clothing materials have some different words between American English and British English. I wanted to learn more words during my stay in the UK.

If you knew Japanese-English words or British English, please let me know!
That's all:D Good-Bye!

We can climb up the stairs that are 528 steps. I climbd them with my friends. I don’t like high pleces so I don’t want to do. Though I was so tired, the view from the top of St Paul's Cathedral was very nice! This is a picture that I took from there.

< British Museum >
The British Museum is a museum of human history and culture in London. Have you ever heard “Daiei Hakubutsukan” in Japanese? There are many historic objects, such as Rosseta Stone, moai and mummy. We was able to take pictures, so it was good experience!

London 1

Today, I’ll talk about London!

As you know, London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom.
It is the center of economy, culture, traffic and entertainment in the world. What do you know about London? Sadly, before I went to London, I know little things about London. But London was very cool city!!!!

I went to London for two days.
In two days, I visited many many places. So I’d like to introduce them.

< Big Ben >
Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock of the Palace of Westminster in London. It was so big and beautiful. Moreover, it has a wonderful presence. Though I have never seen, it is lighten up at night like the left picture.

<  Londoneye >
London Eye is a giant 135-meter tall Ferris wheel located on the bank of the River Thames in London. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the UK. One capsule can contain 25 people. I didn’t ride it because I don’t like high places. But I really moved by the beauty of London Eye.

Next time, I'll talk about london, too, because I don't talk all things I want to talk.
See you soon!!!!

Coin

Today’s topic is coin!
As told before, there are 8 coins in the UK, now.
(from the right big one to the left)
Two pounds (about 280yen)
One pound (about 140yen)
50 pennies (about 70yen)
20 pennies
10 pennies
5 pennies
1 penny
Two pounds is very big and have two colors.
I like 50 pennies because it is septangle.
Don’t you think it is beautiful?
And these coins have the same pictures.

One pound is very thick.
Please look at this picture. One pound is as thick as 100 yen. So my wallet was very heavy.

By the way, do you know interesting works? If we turned back them, the picture would appear. The picture is same as the backside of one pound. I think it is very nice style.

That's all♪ Thank you!

Integreted Skills: Final report!

My personal contribution
Group participation (5)
I researched about our topic beforehand and prepared for my opinion. And during our discussion, I talked about my opinion positively and asked questions for other members. I think it may cause smooth progress of our discussion.

Audience participation (3)
I was not able to state my opinion well, at the beginning of this course. But I think I got little confidences through the course and I’m better that before.

Reporting participation (4)
I sometimes didn’t report in time. But I think my reporting was getting better than first report.

In my opinion, I learn many things and improve my skills of discussion and reporting through this course. And now I like talking in English! I’m glad for it.

Money

Hello, again!
Today’s topic is MONEY.
Do you know British monetary unit?
In the UK, “pound” and “pence” are used. £← Have you ever seen this sign? This is pound sign.
The UK has 4 paper money and 8 coins.
<Paper money>
5 … about 650 yen
10… about 1300 yen
20… about 2600 yen
50… about 6500 yen
50 pound paper money is not always used.
Pictures that are drawn on each paper money are same. She is Elizabeth . Do you know her? She is a queen of United Kingdom.

On the other hands, Japanese paper money is…
1000yen… 7.50 pounds
2000yen… 15 pounds
5000yen… 38 pounds
10000yen… 75 pounds

A person who is printed on 1000-yen paper money is Hideyo Noguchi. He was famous as a bacteriologist. And there are pictures of cherry blossom and Mt. Fuji on the other side. And a person who is on 5000-yen paper money is Ichiyou Higuchi. She was a famous author. Finally, a person who is on 10000-yen paper money is Yukichi Fukuzawa. I don’t know why they were chosen. But it is obvious that they are historic people.
Next time, I'll introduce coins!!
That's all♪ Thank you for reading! See you soon:D

Oxford 2

Have you ever seen this picture?

This is the Great Hall of Christ Church Collage. It is shooting location of the hall of Harry Potter. It was little different from movies because it uses CG animation. But I was really impressed when I visited! Don't you think it is exciting that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were there? Even now, it is used by students.

This is a video of Oxford!!!
Please watch this. It will be help for you to understand Oxford.
Oxford is a very nice city. Don't you think so? I'll never  forget that I went there! I recommend you to go there if you like Harry Potter!!:D
That's all. Thank you♪

Oxford

Do you know Oxford city?
Today, I want to introduce Oxford city!
We stayed there about 1 week.
Oxford city is located in southeast England.

As you know, Oxford is famous for Oxford University. University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. And it consistently ranks in the world’s top 10. There are 38 colleges of the University of Oxford and 6 Permanent Private Halls. When I heard the number of collage, I was very surprised!

The town was so beautiful. It was a first city I visited in England, so I was moved!!!! There were many shops and we could go shopping with enjoyment Buildings were very old and excellent!
Don't  you want to visit Oxford city?

If you stay in Oxford city, I'll recomend that you stay youth hostel. Oxford is a livable city!
Next time, I'll introduce places I visited in Oxford!

McDonald 2

Do you like McDonald? I like very much!!
Have you ever tried McDonald in other countries?
Today, I’ll compare menus of McDonald.
This is a menu of McDonald in England. I saw this menu at all McDonald shops I went.
Hamburger is 89 pounds (about 120 yen) and cheeseburger is 99 pounds (about 130 yen). Now, hamburger is 100 yen in Japan, so they are little expensive than Japanese ones.
And I think breakfast menus are satisfactory. In Japan, there is not so much breakfast. I guess that Japanese people don’t eat McDonald in the morning. It is interesting!
I really liked mayo chicken (99 pounds) that is in saver menu. And my friend’s favorite one was Mozzarella Dippers! Maybe it was one of the limited-time menus. We don’t have it in Japan. I want McDonald to sell mozzarella dippers. I really recommend you to try it.

 Mozzarella Dippers

Chicken legend is menu that we don’t have in Japan, too. It was also so good! Breads were little different from others.
Mac flurry is cheaper than Japan. So I was very happy! I really miss British Mac Flurry.
Do you want to go MacDonald right now?
That’s all

Integreted Skills

Topic: buying and selling pets.

< Nene >
She is 22 years old and works at Kumamoto Health Care Center for 4 years. She thinks that buying and selling pets should be banned. She has tree ideas. First, buying and selling pet is equal to buying and selling their lives. Next, costumers want to buy pappies, so breeders would breed needlessly. It causes many problems. At last, nowadays, the number of killing pet is increasing. So to prevent from it, it should be banned.

< Himawari >
She is 28 years old. She works at a pet shop for 5 years. She can’t stand seeing that many dogs which have diseases and injures are brought to health care centers. So this is why she agrees with prohibition of buying and selling pets.

< Misae >
She is 30 years old and has a dog. She stated that it can’t be helped to buy and sell pets. Her opinion is that if Japan ban buying and selling pets, financial hit would be so big, because these days, pet business is spreading.

< Nanako >
She is 25 years old and a pet shop assistant. She thinks that buying and selling pets can’t be avoided. She works at a pet shop, so if buying and selling pets are banned, she would lose her job. This is why she disagrees with the idea.

In my opinion, in Japanese latest business, pet business is so big. If buying and selling pets are banned, it would cause many problems. However, abandoned and killed pets must not be allowed. Therefore, I think that their consensus that people can’t buy and sell without licenses is very nice idea.

< Comment about discussion >
I felt their discussion succeeded and proceeded smoothly. At the middle of discussion, they have reverse ideas one another, but suggestion made them consensus.

Integreted Skills

Topic: Japan should introduce dual surname
< Kaoru >
She is 25 years old and works at company. She has a boyfriend and intends to marry him. But she doesn’t want to change her surname because she doesn’t want to bring private things into her company and she has no brother. This is why she agreed with dual surnames system.
< Reeyan >
She is Chinese and 27 years old. She agreed with dual surnames system, because in her country, dual surnames are common. She stated that what only women change their name is not equal.
< Tomoko >
She is 45 years old and has a husband and son. She has been marred for 25 years. She said that common surname is important for solidarity of family. So she disagreed with dual surnames.
< Kosuke >
He is 20 years old and a collage student. He disagreed with the idea. He has some questions to dual surname’s problems such as, children’s names, name plates and nominal designation.
< Shigezou >
He is 25 years old and an office worker. He thinks that common surname is Japanese traditional thing. So he didn’t agree with the idea.

Other countries such as Canada, China and Saudi Arabia have already introduced dual surname. So I think dual surname is not so difficult to be introduced. In my opinion, Japan should allow couple’s freedom. I think it is good that if a couple want to have different family name, they can have, and if not so, they can change.

< Comment about discussion >
I felt this group didn’t succeed in their discussion. It was good that each member has their opinion, but they didn’t make suggestion. So they couldn’t finish their discussion in time.

McDonald

There are many McDonalds in the world! It is the most common fast food and of course they are popular in England, too.
So today, I’ll introduce differences between McDonald in England and Japan.
McDonald is a chain store, so they are similar.
At both of McDonald, we have to line up to order, say what we want to buy, pay the money and finally receive our orders. This system is same!

But one day, when I ate French fried potatoes at British McDonald, I found an interesting thing. In Japan, if we want ketchups, we would order from shop assistants and then receive pack of ketchup. This is Japanese system.

On the other hands, in England, I found that people were putting ketchup into small cups like this picture. I have never seen a ketchup server, so I was so surprised! I think it is useful :D

And in Japan, we usually dispose by ourselves. For example, we dump trashes by ourselves. But in England people don’t have to dump by themselves. Instead of that, cleaners dispose. I think Japanese system is better than British system, because if cleaner didn’t clean a table, it doesn’t look neat.

Other countries’ McDonald are interesting!
If you have experienced story in other country’s McDonald, please let me know
Next topic is also McDonald!!!!
That’s all Thank you!
